Gulf Voices Flyout Town Hall Meeting (12:00PM - 1:00PM)
An Exxon-Valdez every week.
That's the amount of oil that has been spilling into the Gulf. Yet already, news media coverage of the oil spill victims has faded -- and you know what that means. The motivation for our leaders to address our disastrous addiction to fossil fuels like oil is fading with it.
That's why on Wednesday, we're helping Gulf Coast residents come to St. Louis to share their stories. And we want to give you a chance to meet and speak with the very people who are living through the worst environmental disaster in our nation's history.
Please join us for the Gulf Voices event.
Schlafly Public Library (St. Louis, MO)
225 North Euclid Avenue
St. Louis, MO 63108
Wednesday, July 14, 2010
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM CDT
RSVP online: http://acp.repoweramerica.org/page/event/detail/repoweramericaevent/4v5z2
Linda Schuch from St. Petersburg, Florida shared her motivation for coming to Missouri and speaking:
"Between having a home on the water and opening a fish market that sells Gulf seafood, I have invested everything in our local environment. The disaster was my wakeup call to get off the side lines and try to work toward clean energy."
Linda's not alone. The thousands of stories like hers should be a wakeup call for America, but only if we help spread the word. Join us and don't forget to bring family and friends. Hear from Linda and others who have witnessed firsthand how America's dependence on oil and other fossil fuels hurts our economy, our environment and our way of life.
It's the human side of this tragedy and it's something you shouldn't miss.

Restore Rain Barrel Workshop (6:00PM - 8:00PM)
Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis’ ReStore will be holding rain barrel demonstration workshops Wednesday evenings at 6 PM on July 28, August 18 and September 9. The one-hour class has been so successful that additional dates had to be added to the schedule. The classes will be held at The ReStore, located at 3763 Forest Park Avenue (between Vandeventer and Spring).
Rain barrels are a way to collect rain water that falls on a roof. The water collected in the barrels can be used instead of fresh tap water for things like watering a garden or lawn or washing a car. Collecting and using rain water reduces the amount of drinkable water used for things other than drinking. This saves water, money, and treatment time. The rain barrel system available at The ReStore redirects the water in a downspout to a barrel or series of barrels instead of allowing it to spill onto a yard or driveway or flow directly into the sewer system. This water is better for plants because rainwater does not include the chemicals, such as chlorine, present in treated drinkable water.
The public is invited to attend the workshops to watch and learn for free, or leave with a rain barrel. Rain barrels are sold for $50. The ReStore offers pre-made barrels and/or parts, tools, and assistance to make your own. Reservations are not required to attend the workshops but will help ensure there will be ample supplies available. E-mail restore@habitatstl.org with your name and the number of rain barrels you are interested in purchasing and/or building.
Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis is a not-for-profit, ecumenical housing ministry working in partnership with individuals and communities of all faiths to improve living conditions and provide affordable housing in the St. Louis community. Habitat for Humanity sponsors, volunteers, and partner families work side-by-side to build new homes. Each homeowner family invests 450 hours of “sweat equity” into their home and other projects. Sponsors include corporations, organizations, religious groups, and individuals. Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis regularly ranks among the top Habitat for Humanity affiliates in the country.
